Matt Lindsay

It is with great excitement that Penobscot Valley announces the hiring of their new Boys Varsity Soccer Coach, Matt Lindsay.

Matt takes over a program that for decades has been a staple in the playoffs each year. The past nine years have seen considerable success for the Howlers, with the team making it to at least the semifinals in 5 of those years (including a 3 year span of a Northern Maine Championship, a Northern Maine Runner Up, and a "Covid-Cup" Championship).

A Penobscot Valley High School Alumni, Coach Lindsay is widely known in the region for his success with the Mattanawcook Academy wrestling program, where he's been the head coach since the 2011/12 season. Among his accolades over the years include leading his team to 4 PVC Championships, 4 Regional Championships, and 1 State Championship (2022). Matt has coached 6 different individual State Champions, who have won 12 State titles between them in their high school years. He's been named PVC Coach of the year 3 times, and was once named the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Coach of the Year.

Matt's soccer experience includes 12 seasons as a head coach at the varsity level, 5 years as a varsity assistant, and 3 years at the middle school level.  He has also been integral in the developmental phase of Howland soccer, volunteering five years at the youth "Cold Stream Kickers" program.  Coach Lindsay led his Katahdin Cougar boy's team to a Gold Ball in 2008, a year in which he was awarded the Maine Soccer Coaches State Coach of the Year ("Small School" category). Matt focuses on instilling class and respect in his players, with his 2023 M.A. boys team winning the Sportsmanship Award as proof.

The hiring will become official following the approved appointment at the next school board meeting in June. Matt will replace Rene Roy, who stepped down as head coach after seven seasons (and numerous others as an assistant).

Please join us in welcoming Coach Lindsay to the PVHS Soccer Community, and wish him the best of luck!
